Hindsight For People With Short Attention Spans

When you flit, butterfly-like from thing to thing it’s easy to feel as if you’re not quite normal. As if there’s something wrong with you. You think that if only you could focus on just one thing, like so and so {insert name of super successful friend here}, then you would be successful/happy/fulfilled etc.

But what if there’s nothing wrong with you? What if you’re just asking the wrong questions and using the wrong yardstick to measure your success?

I know the grass is always greener over there but….

What if I told you that everything you’ve done has led you to where you are today? And that you wouldn’t be the awesome person you are if you hadn’t taken all those detours and been distracted by all those bright and shiny things?

I’m gonna prove it to you.

Challenge

Step into my handy time machine because we’re going to take a trip back into your past.

First we’re going to check out the five things you’re most proud of doing in the last ten years. Go ahead, write them down. I’ll just put the time machine in neutral while we wait.

Now I’m going to set our course to find your five most recent failures and the lessons you’ve learnt from them. Again, I want you to write them down.

Next I want you to write down where you are right now. In both your professional and personal life.

Finally I want you to look at the lists of your successes and failures and see how they have led you to where you are today.

Everything you have done in your past, all the side tracks, detours and aimless wanderings have led you to this point. All those choices you made on the way were shaping you, making you into the person you are now.

~

When you’re in the thick of things, it’s hard to see that you are actually doing exactly what you need to be doing.

But trust me, you are.

What you are doing right now, is exactly what you need to be doing.
